Why Everyone Wants S-400 Missile Defense System ?

Russia impedes the normal existence of the United States. This conclusion can be drawn by reading the speech in Washington at a briefing by US Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs Clark Cooper .

Moscow, in his opinion, is to blame for trying to impose its other anti-aircraft missile systems on other countries, including the S-400. Thus, it limits the ability of the United States to supply “advanced weapons.” What weapons in the field of air defense Cooper considers “advanced” is unknown.

Having complained about the intrigues of the Russians, Cooper immediately made the S-400 air defense system such an advertisement that it was difficult to even dream about:

“A long way has been traveled since the AK-47 became a universal symbol of Soviet-supported rebel movements from Southeast Asia to Africa. Today, Russia is working hard to impose various versions of its S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems around the world. ”

So, the AK-47 is not only a symbol of rebel movements, but also a small weapon unattainable for American gunsmiths in terms of reliability, ease of operation, efficiency, manufacturability, low cost … The list of advantages is not limited to this.

In general, many thanks to the Assistant Secretary of State for comparing the S-400 with the AK-47. Alas, we cannot respond with a similar gesture of goodwill. Because the language does not turn to compare Patriot air defense systems with any classic Colt revolver.

Cooper called the time “difficult.” To a large extent this is due to the fact that other countries have the right to choose, and not everyone seeks to “become America’s partners.”

In these circumstances, Russia demonstrates its mischief: “Through targeted sales of systems such as S-400, Russia seeks to take advantage of the needs of its security partners to create obstacles to our ability to supply them with the most advanced defense systems.”

There is a shift in emphasis. Blame for Cooper is necessary, first of all, the American defense industry, which produces systems that are not able to compete with Russian air defense and missile defense systems. In particular, the Reiteon concern, which produces Patriot air defense systems.

The same Patriot, which did not respond to the Houthis attack on the Saudi oil terminals with the help of semi-articulated drones filled with explosives, and missiles developed in the 60s. It can hardly be considered an “advanced weapon”.

And if Riyadh is deeply disappointed with the American complexes, Russia has absolutely nothing to do with it. Yes, more than a year ago, the king received offers to sell the S-300 and S-400. The king thought about their acquisition. However, his thoughts were interrupted by the diplomatic pressure of Washington, who was extremely painful about the prospect of missing out on “America’s partner,” who could pay huge amounts of money for this partnership for the products of the US military-industrial complex.

And a year ago, there were plenty of reasons to doubt that, if necessary, American air defense systems would protect the country from air raids by unfriendly neighbors. For several years now, Hussites have periodically bombarded Saudi Arabia with tactical missiles, which are a local alteration of the Soviet Scud rocket, developed in the 60s. The effectiveness of the interception of the Scuds by American complexes is extremely low. But at the same time, the company “Ration” in the characteristics of the Patriot PAC3 air defense missile system indicates that the probability of interception of a single missile defense of a tactical missile is 0.6-0.8. We emphasize – any tactical missile, including the most modern. That is, for one Scud missile, a pair of missiles would be enough for the eyes.

At the same time, Reiteon’s last year’s report on the effectiveness of systems delivered to Saudi Arabia (Patriot PAC3 and slightly less efficient Patriot PAC2) states that on average 4 missiles of the “best air defense system in the world” are spent on one Scud. One missile is worth a million. 4 million for one “kerosene”.

The Saudis are rich, they are ready to pay any money, if only the country was reliably protected from “air surprises.” It was such a surprise that occurred in the second half of September, when 18 drones and 7 cruise missiles blew up two Saudi terminals. In this connection, there was a significant jump in oil prices. And this is a very serious matter.

At the same time, not a single American complex reacted to the attack. That is, not a single missile was launched.

The Americans immediately began to make excuses, saying that such a massive attack with small-sized aircraft was extremely difficult to detect. And one of the reasons for this complexity is that the territory of Saudi Arabia is very large, and you can’t keep track of everything. That for reliable protection of air borders it is necessary to build a layered air defense.

Meanwhile, it was the United States that built such an air defense system in Saudi Arabia that does not control the most missile-hazardous areas. It was the United States that equipped this system with its complexes. And so many of these complexes were sold to the Saudis that it is strange to hear about the absence of a multilevel layered air defense.

The airspace of Saudi Arabia is controlled by 17 AN / FPS-117 (V) 3 early warning radars, which form a single network together with a large number of tactical radars. It would seem that the fly will not fly. However, neither drones nor cruise missiles were detected by means of missile attack warning. All attacking means were able to achieve goals without hindrance.

The United States transferred 96 launchers of the Patriot PAC2 and PAC3 SAM systems to Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the complexes of the latest modification of PAC3 are twice as many as PAC2. And trained the local staff in their operation.

SAM Patriot are insured by other complexes, forming a three-level defense system. The second level is represented by medium-range air defense systems – up to 40 km. These include 128 I-Hawk air defense launchers. Of course, they appeared a long time ago – in the 70s, but as a result of a number of modernizations they managed to be brought to a completely modern state. Of course, in the understanding of the United States.

The third level of defense includes 400 short-range air defense systems M1097 Avenger. This is a cross-country vehicle with two Stinger rocket cartridges and a 12.7 mm caliber anti-aircraft machine gun. All this is controlled by radar. Against drones, the “Stingers” are powerless because they are equipped with thermal homing heads. But with subsonic cruise missiles, not the most perfect, they are quite capable of dealing.

And all this colossus, for which “America’s partner” paid a lot of money, was inactive during the attack on the terminals. When 10, 20, 30 complexes do not work, then this can be attributed to a tragic accident. But when more than six hundred launchers, served by a hundred radars, do not work, then this is a verdict.

It finally came to Riyadh. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman turned for help to Seoul for the acquisition of medium-range South Korean air defense systems.

It turns out that not only Russia, but also South Korea is putting sticks in the wheels of the United States, preventing the sale of American low-quality military equipment for air defense. The ratio of the effectiveness of Russian and American air defense systems became clear to the Turks. They, not wanting to throw money away, bought the S-400 system. India is going to do the same.
